It began as a cultural and political movement amongst the Catalan provinces in Spain. Creatives were a large part of the movement, helping to develop an eclectic new style of architecture largely inspired by nature.

2019-06-09 · Modernism – or in Catalan Modernisme – is an art and literature movement that was primarily connected to Catalonia and Barcelona in the period from approximately 1880-1915. In the context of the rapid development and urban changes during the industrial revolution the Catalan elite – politicians, bourgeoisie and rich entrepreneurial families – intensified their efforts to create an own Modernisme buildings contain the main features of the first Modernisme: references spread to Catalan Gothic architecture, the use of powerful ornamental and decorative elements, and the use of traditional Catalan constructive elements (enameled tile, plaque brick vault or Catalan vault, wrought iron) and other industrial ones (metallic structures, cast iron, ceramic brick seen). Modernisme was an important movement in Tortosa, spearheaded by two key architects, Pau Monguió and Joan Abril, who would spark an architectural, social and technological awakening in the city in the early 20th century.
